Flatwoods Wilderness Park and Bike Trails
Trail Overview
Flatwoods Park is a sprawling 5,400-acre natural haven located in the northeast part of Hillsborough County, Florida. As one of the five interconnected parks in the Wilderness Parks system, it shares borders with Trout Creek Park, Dead River Park, Morris Bridge Park, and John B. Sargeant Memorial Park. This park is best known for its unique flatwoods ecosystem—a captivating blend of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and prairie grasses. With a mix of paved and off-road trails, Flatwoods offers something for everyone, from nature cruisers to XC mountain bikers looking to put in the miles.
Wildlife sightings are common, with armadillos, turtles, hawks, and deer frequently spotted along the trails. Whether you’re pedaling through the forest or enjoying a quiet break under the trees, Flatwoods is a peaceful place to connect with the outdoors.
Flatwoods Mountain Bike Trail Highlights
- Paved Loop (7 miles): This scenic, car-free loop is perfect for biking, running, or hiking. Well-maintained with water coolers and shaded rest spots.
- Singletrack Trails (south of Morris Bridge Rd): These lesser-known MTB trails are great for beginners or XC riders looking to log steady miles. Mostly flat and flowing, with no major features—ideal for skill-building or endurance rides.
- Hole in the Fence Access: An unmarked access point across from the Trout Creek Park entrance on Morris Bridge Road. Closest entry to the off-road MTB trail network.
Beginners will enjoy building confidence here without pushing beyond their limits, while intermediate riders can use the terrain for fast laps or stamina training. The natural setting includes peaceful lakes, hardwood swamps, and plenty of shaded stretches. Always keep other users in mind—these trails are shared with hikers and trail runners.
