Timberlake Overview
Located in the southern portion of Eglin Air Force Base near Fort Walton Beach, the Timberlake Mountain Bike Trails span over 20 miles of singletrack through varied pine forest terrain. The trail system loops around Timberlake Pond and is divided by Lightwood Knot Creek, with trailheads accessible from Ranger Camp Road, RR 234, and the (currently closed) Timber Lake camping area.
This flowing trail network includes everything from tight slalom-style sections between trees to gentle elevation changes, log crossings, and sandy patches that require quick reaction and balance adjustments. Trail surfaces vary from hardpack to pine needles, loose oak leaves, and soft sand. Be prepared for quick transitions in traction, especially in corners. Summer temperatures can be hot and dry—bring plenty of water. The next closest trail is the University of West Florida MTB trails.
Trail Difficulty Definitions
Timberlake’s trails are color-coded by difficulty level:
- Green (Beginner) – Smooth terrain with ride-arounds for obstacles. Suitable for novice riders.
- Blue (Intermediate) – Longer routes with more frequent and technical obstacles. Expect steeper climbs and some dismounting.
- Red (Advanced/Expert) – The most challenging terrain, with tight turns, steep drops and climbs, larger technical features, and limited ride-arounds.
Most trails are one-way to minimize erosion, avoid head-on collisions, and preserve trail features. Two-way connectors are marked on both sides of trees.
Notable Trails
- Carbo Loop (Red) – One of the most clearly marked loops. Fun twists and turns through small oak and pine slalom-style forest sections.
- Speed Demon – True to its name, this trail keeps you moving fast with quick lines and bursts of technical challenge.
- Race Trail – High-energy singletrack that’s great for pushing your pace. Markings may be sparse, so pay attention.
- Pine Dogs – Features classic North Florida forest riding with a good mix of flow and punchy climbs.
