Orlando Wetlands Park: A Ride Through Florida’s Natural Beauty
Orlando Wetlands Park has a peaceful and scenic bike ride through its 1,650 acres of marshes, hardwood hammocks and lakes. With over 20 miles of gravel and grass trails, it’s perfect for a leisurely ride through Florida’s wildlife, including birds, alligators and butterflies. The flat terrain and well maintained trails make it suitable for all skill levels. You can ride the 2 mile Birding Loop or 3.7 mile Lake Searcy Loop or create your own route. While the trails are designed for passive recreation and wildlife viewing, it’s a unique opportunity for cyclists to get into Florida’s natural beauty. Note that some areas like the Cypress Boardwalk and footpaths are pedestrian only.
If you want to check out the park, bring water and sun protection as there is limited shade along the trails. You can also use the park’s amenities like restrooms and information at the Visitor Pavilion.
The trail system winds through hardwood hammocks, marshes and lakes giving riders plenty of opportunities to see over 200 bird species, otters, foxes, deer, turtles and alligators. The wide, flat doubletrack is perfect for beginners, families and those who just want to ride relaxed and immersed in nature. The trails are designed to be flexible so you can choose your own route and ride at your own pace.
While the park doesn’t have named singletrack trails like more technical mountain biking spots, the Orlando Wetlands Loop Trail is a 6 mile loop. This easy ride takes you through all the different habitats in the park and is great for bird watching and wildlife spotting.
Be aware the park has minimal canopy coverage so there’s limited shade on the trails. To make your ride more comfortable:
Hydration: Bring enough water to stay hydrated during your ride.
Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen and consider a hat or helmet with a visor.
Timing: Plan your visit during cooler parts of the day, especially in the summer, to avoid heat exhaustion.
Also, the park is closed from October 1 to January 20.
